This morning’s documentary photography is spent with Martha, a domestic worker, and a single mother. Living in Sebokeng, South Africa, she wakes up at 5 everyday in order to make the commute into work. She refuses to eat or drink anything during her shifts, in the belief that this will only lead to laziness. Martha works six days a week and her only rest day is Tuesdays which she spends with her only daughter, Loretta.

Following my morning with her, I paid a visit to the nearest bakery to purchase a cake as a form of thanks for her patience and frankness. During our time together, Martha divulged that it’s Loretta’s 8th birthday soon and that she was concerned about finding the funds for a birthday cake.
